David
The Shepherd King
Key Scripture
“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.”
— Psalm 23:1

✦Life Story
David was the youngest son of Jesse, a shepherd from Bethlehem, chosen by God when everyone expected his elder brothers. He killed Goliath with a single stone while Israel's warriors cowered, demonstrating that one person with God is always a majority. As king, he united Israel, established Jerusalem, and wrote many of the Psalms — honest prayers that swing from anguish to praise and back again. He failed spectacularly, committing adultery and murder, yet he repented deeply and was called a man after God's own heart. His life teaches that God does not choose the qualified; He qualifies the chosen — and that genuine repentance always leads home.
Famous Scriptures
Psalm 23:1–6
The Shepherd Psalm
“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.”
Psalm 91:1–4, 11
The Psalm of Protection
“He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.”
Psalm 121:1–8
The Psalm of the Hills
“I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.”
Psalm 27:1
The LORD My Light
“The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”
1 Samuel 17:45–47
David to Goliath
“Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand... that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD's.”

LORD, You are my shepherd. Teach me to trust Your provision in the valley as much as I celebrate it on the mountain. Give me a heart quick to repent and slower to wander. Amen.
