John
The Beloved Apostle
Key Scripture
“We love him, because he first loved us.”
— 1 John 4:19

✦Life Story
John was one of the Sons of Thunder — a fiery fisherman who once asked Jesus if they should call down fire on a Samaritan village. Something in three years with Jesus transformed him into the apostle of love. He was the only one of the twelve to stand at the foot of the cross. Jesus entrusted his mother Mary to John's care in His dying moments. After the resurrection and Pentecost, John wrote the Gospel of John, three letters, and the book of Revelation — a remarkable range covering intimate friendship with Jesus, the theology of love, and the cosmic vision of the end of all things. He is believed to be the only apostle who died of natural causes, having outlived everyone else.
