Elijah
The Fire Prophet
Key Scripture
“LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel.”
— 1 Kings 18:36

✦Life Story
Elijah appeared without introduction and announced a three-year drought to the most powerful king in Israel simply because God told him to. He was fed by ravens in the wilderness, performed miracles of provision, and finally stood alone on Mount Carmel against 450 prophets of Baal — calling fire from heaven to settle the question of who is God. The God of Elijah won. Then Elijah ran for his life in fear and depression. God did not rebuke him; He sent an angel with food and water. Twice. After rest and nourishment, Elijah heard God not in the earthquake or the fire but in the still, small voice. His arc from impossible boldness to utter burnout to restoration is one of the most human stories in Scripture.
Famous Scriptures
1 Kings 18:36–37
Fire on Mount Carmel
“And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word. Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the LORD God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again.”
1 Kings 19:12
The Still Small Voice
“And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.”
James 5:16–17
The Prayer of a Righteous Man
“The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months.”
Daily Challenge
After your Mount Carmel moments, let God restore you with rest rather than guilt — Elijah needed sleep and food before he could hear the still small voice.
Prayer
God of Elijah, You send fire and You whisper. Help me to be bold enough to stand alone when I must, and humble enough to rest when You say rest. Let me hear Your still, small voice. Amen.
